  17. <p>     When Alaska Governor Walter Hickel was elected last November
  18. as the candidate of the Alaskan Independence Party, nobody
  19. expected him to do much to further its secessionist platform.
  20. Nobody, that is, except a vocal faction of the tiny fringe
  21. party. Angry that Hickel has not done enough to detach Alaska
  22. from the U.S., the group is mounting a campaign to have Hickel
  23. and Lieutenant Governor Jack Coghill recalled from office,
  24. charging that their nomination was illegal.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Hickel joined the Independence ticket just minutes before
  27. the filing deadline for last fall's election and signaled
  28. throughout the campaign that he did not share its views. Though
  29. Hickel has been ignoring the campaign, Coghill has not. As head
  30. of the division of elections, he has refused to give the recall
  31. committee any information about what legal steps must be taken
  32. to eject an official.
